As the pendulum swings, empathy has been removed from our society - TopicsExpress

As the pendulum swings, empathy has been removed from our society and replaced with blame and labels, but many are trying to bring it back. When a nation polarizes itself, as we have worked hard to do (wrongly so), empathy is seen as weakness, emotional, and rationally/intellectually insignificant. It also is associated with liberal thinking, when in fact it is the scarlet thread of humanity and all major religions, including humanism. The single most influential line in this article to me is the critique of only showing empathy at home and not seeing things globally. Again, this thinking is the effect of years of training to become polarized thinkers. Empathy and compassions is not an either/or issue (either take care of those at home or overseas), it is a both/and (take care of both the people here and around the world) component of life. salon/2014/11/08/the_one_thing_that_could_save_the_world_why_we_need_empathy_now_more_than_ever/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=socialflow
