As the snow falls i sit here wallowing in my head cold stupor and think about ice ages. The last ice age ended 11,500 years ago thanks to latest estimates of oxygen isotopes, oceanic sediment and glacial cores. One major misconception about ice ages is the fact that the entire Earth was gripped in snow and ice. Not exactly. Earth at this time still had tropical climes. In fact the last ice age was was interrupted by warming periods called interglacials. These were periods were ice sheets retreated and the earth looked very much like what we see today, climatically speaking. Then the climate shifts and the glaciers come back - and ooops! We are glaciated again. That last ice age was extensive. It spanned some 2.6 million years and peaked some 21,000 years ago. There are, in some circles of science that the ice age never really ended. That the wonderful climate humanity has enjoyed is simply an interglacial period. Hmmmmmm. Well, we still have ice sheets in certain locations in the world. Makes sense.
