As the title suggests it’s been a month of huge captures across the UK –a record month in fact, since I started Big Carp almost 25 years ago. Our ‘Catch Report’ section and ‘Made in England’ feature have swelled to a massive 40 pages with dozens of 40lb-plus and the odd 50lb-plus carp! In fact, there have been so many that we’ve just had to carry a few over until next month. So what have we got lined up for you this month? Well, it really is the cream of the ‘secret carpers’. Carp anglers who, until recently, have never divulged their precious catches, and I am proud to say it’s Big Carp, of course, that they have chosen to reveal their secrets. Firstly the Black Country’s finest, Dave Mallin. Dave has only recently started carp fishing again after a little break, and once again he’s at the cutting edge. Most of you will not have heard much of Dave’s catches, but Dave is among the best of the best. He had a string of monster carp over a ten-year period, unequalled in the carp fishing world. He was the only angler to catch all of the elusive Mere residents; in fact he caught the Black Mirror twice! Not only that, but his catches at Wraysbury and Yateley are still talked about as ‘unbelievable’. But there are a number of other catches too, almost all never before published. Join Dave this month as he tells the tale of the Mere’s massive linear, thought by many to be a myth, but landed only by Dave. It’s great news that Dave’s whole life history will also be part of our next book in the series ‘Big Carp Hunters’, and Dave will be joining me for the launch at the Carp Society Winter Show at Sandown Park. Another great exclusive is ‘The Urban Myth’ himself, Terry Dempsey and a catch-up of his monthly diary, and this guy can catch ‘em. Once again, he’s smashing his chosen waters, some fabulous carp from Kent and Oxford – more from Terry next month too. Martin Pick takes cover spot this month. It was a hard decision between Scott Dove’s massive Stow common and Martin’s classic returner, but Martin’s got the vote by six to four in the office – my apologies to Scott! Martin has been on a roll this season on his Berkshire syndicate water taking numerous forty-pluses. Now here’s you chance to read how he did it. My good buddies Jay Willis and Scott Dove – regular contributors to Big Carp over the years – have once again delivered the goods with a highly entertaining account of a season spent on the Stow. Great results as usual from the dynamic duo. Check out Shaun Young’s latest results at Wellington Country Park too… What a venue this place is, and Shaun has been clubbing them like seals –four forties and a handful of thirties in a day… Yes, I said in a day!! Also this month Paul Rudd’s Denham diary, Marc Twaite at Cassien, the Chronicle Fishing boys tackle another venue, summer tiger nut tips from Tim Childs, Made in England packed with this month’s most beautiful carp and our Catch Report section simply bursting at the seams with more forties and fifties. Like I said at the start, a month of monsters! So don’t miss this month’s awesome issue available in every newsagent in the UK or by subscription at bigcarpmagazine.co.uk And we’ve got some great issues coming up including an ‘Off the Beaten Track’ special. So if you’ve been doing a bit of ‘guesting’ and landing something a bit special, please email it in to bigcarpmagazine@hotmail. The venue and even the captor can remain nameless. Finally a quick look at what books I’ve got coming up. Firstly there’s the Big Carp Rotary Letter –three volumes of the legendary letter with contributions from the Who’s Who of carp anglers; Ian Stott – Elstow, unmissable and incredible, Ian’s account of his time on this amazing venue; Dave Mallin’s life history in the ‘Big Carp Hunters’ series, and a new technical series kicking off with Big Carp Advanced Rigs – the definitive directory of the latest rigs, explaining how to tie them, when to use them and how to get the edge when using them –all the complicated stuff made easy. As I said before, Big Carp – more than just another carp mag! See you on Facebook and Twitter. Keep at ‘em, Rob Maylin.
