As this article notes, if everyone in the US with Hep C were treated at list price, the tab for Sovaldi would come to $227,000,000,000. Thats 227 billion for those of you counting your fingers and toes. Surely the drug maker, Gilead, spent at least $220B on R&D for this drug. Im not against drug companies making money and I agree that profit can be a huge incentive to solving problems. At the same time, Jonas Salk cured polio without even seeking a patent. So would it be so much to ask drug companies to be just a little bit more like Jonas Salk and a little bit less like Gordon Gecko?
