As this year draws to an end we can look back at all we as animal advocates accomplished this year 2014 in New York State to fight the inhumane business of puppy mills and puppy stores. After 4 years of educating politicians on the inhumane reality of puppy mills, January 2014 NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo signs into law bill A 740 S 3753 allowing municipalities to regulate pet dealers as long as municipalities do not FULLY BAN the retail sale of puppies and kittens. In June of 2014 Suffolk County , New York became the first municipality to pass legislation IR 1047, regulating the source of puppy store puppies ,in order to combat puppy mill abuse. Nassau County, Albany County, New York City have all followed passing legislation to regulate pet dealers and the source of the puppies they sell. Congratulations Advocates. As we look ahead to 2015 we have even more work to do. The USDA has eased their inspections of commercial dog breeding facilities in order to allow puppy millers to circumvent the newly passed local legislation and continue to sell puppies to puppy stores. We will need all hands on deck this year to educate Congressmen and women on the reality and inhumane treatment of breeding dogs. Congress must get involved in demanding the USDA enforce the mandated Animal Welfare Act for commercial dog breeders. Thank you all for fighting for the voiceless , helpless, hopeless. Happy New Year
