As we all get used to having a new girl around, the lovely miss Sambo, unfortunately one of our favourites is having a rough week. As most of you will know Onion has been mourning the loss of Bob for a long time and has been struggling with grief and also an ongoing tooth infection. Two weeks ago Onion has taken a turn for the worse and lost all energy and refused to move more than 10m in any one hour. Pluk, our dedicated head mahout, left the Sambo move half way up the highway and rushed back to join Den, her mahout, and has been working with her since to try and get her back on track. She started eating again and the vet has been giving vitamin injections, but she has dropped a lot of weight. So earlier this week she was slowly moved over close to base camp to enable us to load her up with lots of banana trees and a high sugar diet to try and get some condition back on her. In a big low point on Tuesday this week Onion just lay down in the middle of the day and didnt want to move. A shadow of her former self, we had small hopes of success, but together Jack, Pluk and all the boys managed to roll her and she stood up again. The last couple of days has been a real struggle. We have sent reports to the elephant hospital in Thailand and are trying to get blood samples screened looking for answers. So as the cold season is definitely kicking in here and the boys camp out with Onion in the forest, please everyone send you thoughts, prayers and love this way for one very special elephant.
