As we approach the historical birthday of our great nation; July 4, 1776 …The United States of America….Let us take a look back and give a great big thank you to these men for the effort and success they had and as a result we have and know our freedoms, as laid out in the historical documents. Here are those that played some part in establishing our great nation; George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, Gouverneur Morris, Roger Sherman, Alexander Hamilton, George Mason, Abraham Baldwin, Richard Bassett, Gunning Bedford, John Blair, David Brearly, Jacob Broom, John Dickinson, William Samuel Johnson, Rufus King, John Langdon, William Livingston, James McHenry, William Paterson, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, George Read, Hugh Williamson, William Blount, Pierce Butler, Daniel Carroll, George Clymer, Jonathan Dayton (The City of Dayton, OH was named after him), William Few, Nicholas Gilman, Nathaniel Gorham, Jared Ingersoll, Jr., Daniel Jenifer, Thomas Mifflin, Robert Morris, Charles Pinckney III, John Rutledge, Richard Dobbs Spaight, James Wilson, William Richardson Davie, Oliver Ellsworth, Eldridge Gerry, William Churchill Houston, William Houstoun, John Lansing, Alexander Martin, Luther Martin, James McClung, John Francis Mercer, William Pierce, Edmund Jennings Randolph, Caleb Strong, George Wythe, Robert Yates, Samuel Adams, Benjamin Rush, John Hancock, Thomas Jefferson, Francis Lightfoot Lee, Lewis Morris, Josiah Bartlett, John Adams, Oliver Wolcott, Matthew Thornton, John Morton. (There are other that signed the Declaration of Independence but I cannot read their names). Samuel Adams, “The right to freedom being the gift of God Almighty…”The Rights of the Colonists as Christians…may be best understood by reading and carefully studying the institutes of the great Law Giver…which are to be found clearly written and promulgated in the New Testament. A lot of people make references to the “wall of separation” statement that was written by Thomas Jefferson who was not a Christian. A lot of people think that this comes out of the Constitution. Jefferson was not even a founding father, was in Europe at the time of the signing of the Constitution. Jefferson gave his interpretation 11 years after the Constitution. He actually cut out the miracles of Jesus and made his own Bible. So for anyone to say that there is a separation of Church and State is ignorant of the facts of this great NATION! I will end with the words that are graven into the Jefferson Monument in Washington D.C., words which are from Jefferson says this, “Almighty God hath created the mind free. All attempts to influence it by temporal punishments or burdens…are a departure from the plan of the Holy Author of our religion. … No men shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship or ministry or shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief, but all men shall be free to profess and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of religion. I know but no one code of morality for men whether acting singly or collectively. I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. God, who gave us life, gave us liberty. Can the liberty of a nation be secure where we have removed a conviction that these liberties are a gift of God? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just. That His justice cannot sleep forever. Commerce between master and slave is despotism. Nothing is more certainly written in the Book of Life than these people are to be free. So you say our nation is NOT a CHRISTIAN NATION! That it was not founded on the Christian Faith. Over these past few weeks from visiting the home of the 7th President General Andrew Jackson, to visiting the tomb of Abraham Lincoln. I am convinced that God was the reason that we have our liberties today! In the home (The Hermitage) of General Jackson there was a Bible in each room of his home and on the Lincoln memorial was Scripture that was quoted by President Abraham Lincoln. You can believe if you want that our nation is a non-Christian nation. But it is not true! Christianity is alive in well in America, and if you do not believe it, that is your very right to not believe in Christ. But if you take the words that were written above by Thomas Jefferson and take them to heart! It is clear that he believed in a personal God, but he was not a Christian. I issue you a challenge today. That for the next 21 days to read a Chapter a day in “The Gospel of John,” and ask God if you are real to show Himself to you. It will change your life. And I pray that you come to drink from my Savior Jesus Christ and accept the eternal gift of life that He gives to all men. In Christ Alone, John Sams
