As we close out on the month of biocontrol of exotic invasive and other pest species, we revisit purple loosestrife. Aquatic weeds represent some of the most challenging management issues because each species presents different issues with biological, mechanical, physical (as in fire and flooding), and chemical controls. Still one of the best options for purple loosestrife control may be the four different insects brought from its Eurasian homeland. Some of the other most insidious aquatic pests such as hydrilla, water hyacinth, Eurasian watermilfoil, and giant salvinia each have their own unique control challenges that keep land and water managers busy trying to innovate more effective eradication and control methods.
