As we deal with Beverly’s tragedy this week, another concern that we all have is that the ‘public’ will soon forget Beverly’s horrific murder and begin to demand that agents react immediately to showing request. Of course, I have been asked by many people about the situation for the past week, and my thoughts keep going to “there needs to be a ‘long term’ effect from this”. Listening to Karen Moore Crowson this morning on KATV, she hoped the public would be patient with us REALTORS when we ask to qualify them further, and meet them at the office before showings. Sure, for the immediate time frame, everyone will understand our requests, but unfortunately, the public will soon forget the situation, especially as new generations of buyers emerge. I have suggested to our local and state REALTOR organizations, with the family’s approval, that our organizations endorse an official “Beverly Policy”. The full details of the official policy need to be determined, but at the root is not showing property to strangers without meeting at the office and capturing identification. Think of “The Morgan Nick Alert”! Generations after Morgan Nick was abducted, this is an official alert that everyone knows and understands the complete situation. By having all of our agents communicate on a regular basis, “The Beverly Policy”, we, as well as the public, keep the situation known, and as with the Morgan Nick Alert, provide on-going protection for our agents. And hopefully this will allow the public to at least ask, “what is the Beverly Policy”, at which time we can explain why these policies are in place. REALTORS are independent contractors and can’t be told to follow any policy from our brokerages or REALTOR associations, but this would help everyone understand, and remember, the need for change! Since there are so many agents and so many brokerages, even across Central Arkansas, we need to endorse something like this together and continuously.
