As we deal with our flooding problems caused by unpredictable weather, and the east coast cleans up from its weather woes, a former farmer from the east coast posted this timely reminder for us: Sometimes people (who have never farmed) ask me why I dont farm any more. And my honest response is that I no longer want the kind of devastation that my farming friends in the Maritimes are facing this morning to be part of my life. The unfortunate thing is that if everyone were as selfish as me (and face it, most of us are) then no one would grow food at all. So next time you buy food directly from a farmer, please thank them for what they do, because without their broad shoulders (physical, mental and spiritual) we would have no food. - Rowena Power , local food activist, former farmer, small business owner
