As we engage in the political activity of our denomination - TopicsExpress

As we engage in the political activity of our denomination surrounding LGBT inclusion, I would like to ask a series of questions: Within the larger culture: What was the origin of the LGBT movement (with a beginning back to the mid 1970s or earlier, please)? How was it organized and what external supports did it depend on? What was the original purpose of the LGBT movement? What were the tenets of desired change in the LGBT movement? How has that changed and evolved? What is the LGBT worldview? Within the church: At what point did the purposes of the LGBT movement move into religious circles? Are there differences between the LGBT movement in the church and in the larger culture or do we/are we mirroring the larger culture? How much study has been done to understand (from outside the argument – fair and balanced objectivity) what the LGBT movement is within the larger culture? What materials are the results of that study? How familiar are we with the results of that study? To what degree is the movement within the church comparable to the movement in the larger culture? Is the church transforming the world or is the world transforming the church? Note: with thanks to Waretown UMC “ A worldview is a set of fundamental beliefs that determines your primary life values, decisions, and actions. Your worldview has more to do with your values than your religion. (Mike Slaughter, Momentum For Life, p.35) “ How does the LGBT worldview stack up against my (each of us as individuals) personal world view? How does it stack up against the worldview of the UMC denomination? For that matter, how does my personal worldview stack up against the worldview of the UMC? Does my life (decisions and actions) and do my values truly express the worldview I think I have – is there internal integrity? The same question for those who identify on either side of the LGBT. The same question as a point of self examination for the denomination. If we cannot answer these kinds of questions we arent fit to mold and form our denomination for the transformation of the world.
