As we read about the crisis at the southern border, let us all remember these are refugee children fleeing violence. President Obama needs to clearly state they are refugees and lead with a call to request the aid of the Red Cross, UNCHR, and citizens across the country to send donations and toys. Sending immigration judges to the border will mean many of these children will be returned to their countries where violent gangs control their neighborhoods. Children have no right to representation in immigration court. Can you imagine how daunting it is to appear in court as a child? Many more children will be housed in remote detention centers where access to an attorney is bleak. Many organizations have volunteer opportunities to assist the children. If you can help in any way, start off by contacting nonprofits like the American Immigration Lawyers Association and Catholic Charities.
