As we start a new Rotary calendar year this week, its appropriate to focus on the economic future of Gaston County where have the unfortunate distinction of being the slowest growing county in the Charlotte Region. The Greater Gaston Development Corporation (GGDC)was organized and funded by 41 businesses located in the County in August 2014. Its mandate was to get the country back on an accelerated growth track with a new strategic vision and focused implementation that will attracting new jobs and grow the countys tax base. Since August, a diverse group of 105 volunteers have been working on seven committees, each focused on a specific driver of growth. On December 15, the GGDC presented a preliminary report of its findings and recommendations. Carroll Gray, who served as CEO of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce for 22 years, was hired by the GGDC to provide counsel and support for this new economic initiative and the committees who will be charged with its implementation. Under Carrolls leadership,200 businesses were recruited to the Charlotte region and the Charlotte Chamber became the 6th largest in the U.S. Carroll is also a long time member of Rotary.
