As we struggle with our own fasts and battle the heat of July and the long hours, remember: - Our brothers and sisters in Xinjiang, China, who have been prevented by the government from fasting, and forced to break their fasts. How they would love to be able to enjoy the pangs of fasting! - The Syrians who have suffered more than two years of brutal civil war and massacres and destruction. What they would give merely to feel the simple pleasurable feelings of hunger that a days fast evokes! - Palestinians in the Occupied Territories, who are being bombed and harassed in this holy month by the current Apartheid regime, and have known nothing for their whole lives other than occupation and camp life. The heat of July would be a welcome relief for them, if that were their only worry! - The Muslims of Myanmar, many of whom are living in camps of barbed wire, barely having enough to sustain themselves in this holy of holy months. For them, the fast is perpetual, and not just in Ramadan. - The prisoners of Guantanamo, who insisted on fasting (hunger strike) themselves every day, to show the world that even if they are locked up and chained worse than animals, without trial or hope of justice, their spirits are free and will not be broken. And the list goes on and on (Kashmir, the Horn of Africa, etc.)... Lets put our struggles in perspective, and thank Allah for what He has blessed each and every one of us with. -Shaykh Yasir Qadhi
