As winter rolls across Lake Guntersville, its character is changing. Grass, which to many is that lake’s dominant feature, is no longer abundant everywhere. Anglers who relate to grass three seasons of the year to find fish now need to become adept at finding different types of structure. The truth is, Guntersville, like most other lakes, is full of a variety of different types of structure, and to catch fish through the winter you just have to find it. To find different structure, start at the edges. The edges not only define Guntersville but also provide clues to its hidden secrets. That’s true not only of this lake; the keys are the same for lakes everywhere. The first edge to become aware of is the bank, which reveals a lot of secrets about the bottom below. Observing land features can tell you where the shell beds are located, or where rock or gravel bottoms are nearby. If the shoreline edges are rocky—either man-laid rock or natural—it generally defines the adjoining bottom as rocky, too. The converse of that is also true. If the edges are clay or sandy then the lake bottom extending out from that bank is probably the same. One of the most common elements of the bottom is finding land points. Where you see a finger-like point extending out into the lake, more than likely you’ll find a progression of that point running on out into the deeper water. As you move away from the shore, you start relying more on lake maps and your electronics. When it comes to identifying lake-bottom structure, today’s technology is astounding! Your Lowrance Structure Scan can reveal the secrets of the bottom with such clarity that you can easily identify stumps, rock, shell beds and more. You just have to spend a little time using it until your eyes adjust to and automatically interpret the digital formations on the screen. Once you reach that stage, finding structure on the bottom becomes as easy as if your screen was a big magnifying glass shows every detail you need to know. Use these keys, become proficient in use of your electronics to discover the secrets on the bottom of your lake, and your fishing skill will improve substantially. Need help learning how to use your Lowrance unit? Give me a call and fish with me. I teach these skills every day, and I can shorten your learning curve and help you become a structure-finding wizard in short order.
