As ya do. Or as I do. Went to the veggie and junk market today. Saw $5 biog Monash - the outsider who won a war. So with a title like that - todays the day for me to learn about Monash. Learning is an organic experience. Eine bissele der kismet - Inshallah - bashert. A quick glance showed that amongst his 1001 attributes (one of which wasnt horsemanship) he loved theatre, literature, math etc. His father was a schlepper (a Yiddishe battler) with a failing shop so Monashs mother took the kids to Melbourne for a better education. When Monash was about 12 (pre-Bar Mitzvah) he went to visit his father on the school holiday Jan/Feb. The father had little money but needed a horse for transport. One day, in that first week of February 1878 in the fathers town - Jerilderie - in came some horse traders led by Ned Kelly!!!! Good deal - cheap as chips - father bought a horse. Monash spent an hour chatting with the curious Ned Kelly who gave me some good advice. Which Monash never revealed. He ranked that meeting as a highlight of his life. Even after the war of 1914-18.... Later he would muse on what great soldiers they (Ned Kelly gang) would have made. author Roland Perry.
