As you all know, I spent some time in Wysong Clinic a while back. That experience with conversion therapy was the central event in a string of harassment that began when I came out, five years ago. After moving to Bonham, I just wanted to forget the whole experience. Thus, I abandoned my female gender identity. I have since accepted that you cant change the past. Abandoning my gender identity certainly wouldnt change the fact that I cant trust my family any longer. As of February, I will be adopting the name Kate Kane Blackwell. Naming oneself is rather difficult, so I stole a large portion of the name from a fictional character. I dont think shell mind. (: I wanted to leave any trans people who find this post with two pieces of advice. First, dont underestimate how divided liberal America can be. The biggest advantage conservatives have ever had is their unity. The diverse nature of liberalism can make that level of unity almost impossible to achieve. Second, our adversaries on both sides of the aisle have gotten smarter in this day and age. They wont always express their prejudice openly. Respect your enemy, and dont be naive. A solid guideline is to trust actions more then words. Im not saying that you should always expect the worst, but use caution. I think thats the most practical advice I can give to anyone unfortunate enough to find themselves in such a circumstance. Despite the challenges, I am proud to be a lesbian.
