As you have no doubt noticed, we have been celebrating and continue to celebrate 50 years of equality in athletics at Father Ryan, honoring the life and legacy of Willie Brown. This year, the Multi-Cultural Student Union is focusing on understanding Willie Brown and his achievements in their broader historical context. This spring marks the 60th anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision that compelled public schools to desegregate with all deliberate speed. While Father Ryan desegregated in the fall of 1954, Nashville Public Schools did not begin the process until 1957. With that in mind, in celebration of Martin Luther King Day we are facilitating an all-school viewing of the documentary A Child Shall Lead Them: The Documentary during the advising period. This short documentary details the struggle to desegregate in Nashville and features interviews with city officials, reporters, parents and, most importantly, students.
