As you know, I very often refer to myself as a walking yard sale. When I do, a new reader inevitably asks what that means. Well, I took the phrase from my dear friend, B, who used it years ago to describe her own family. It felt like a perfect description of me and my rag tag bunch - always running late, always disorganized, dropping things, bumping into walls, generally comically screwing things up. If its still not clear, perhaps the following example will help. Im currently at the cancer institute for my twice-annual appointment. (Thanks to an extensive family history of breast cancer, Im in a high risk monitoring program. Good times. ). I just finished the post-mammogram consult in which I was told that I was free to change out of the hospital johnny before going to the next appointment (at which Id be given another one, but thats neither here nor there.) I had to pee. Badly. With just three minutes to change and make it to the next appointment (which is, of course, in an entirely different building in the complex), I thought Id change in the ladies room. Being me, I thought Id be super efficient and change WHILE peeing. Oh, cmon, like youve never done it. Anyway, somehow, in the middle of this blur of efficiency and organization, I actually managed to drop my bra into the toilet. That, my friends, is what a walking yard sale is.
