As you may already know, there have been 15 fatal Parvovirus cases reported in the city of Lowell. We have received several phone calls regarding the parvovirus and would like to share some important information. Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious viral disease that can produce a life-threatening illness. The virus attacks rapidly dividing cells in a dog’s body, most severely affecting the intestinal tract. You can protect your dog from this potential killer by making sure he/she is up-to-date on their vaccinations and by making sure that your pet received the distemper vaccine. When your dog is vaccinated for “Distemper” (aka DHPP or DA2PPV) it helps protect your dog from Distemper, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus. If you have any question about your pets vaccine status, please call our office. If you have a new puppy – Be sure to minimize exposure to other dogs and dog friendly environments until their vaccine series is complete!
