Ash Wednesday: a day in which we begin to try to walk the way of Christ in His path of self-denial and suffering. He did not take this path just to procure for us a free ticket to heaven or even just to provide to us a gift of salvation by grace. It goes beyond that, because He suffered leaving us an example that we should follow in his steps. (I Peter 2:21). When we take the ashes upon our forehead, we are reminded that we are made from dust, and to the dust we also shall return. We are told that in fact we are only dust. More than giving up some kind of decadent luxury, or even giving up a necessary convenience during the time of lent, our main task should be to take to heart the truth that we actually are only dust... and thereby forsake what is our greatest offense against God, and the root cause of all of our offenses. That is, of course, our pride. How can a big bag of dust be so absurdly proud of itself? If I could only realize how ridiculous I look when I hold on to my foolish pride... well, I think i should be able to let it go, simply because I am too proud to look so foolish. -borrowed from Jim Lee as posted in Anglican Church in North America
