Ashland: Setting the record straight on firefighting services Many people are still under the impression firefighters, especially in a small community, sit around the fire station playing cards and watching television waiting for the next fire to occur. According to Ashland Fire Captain Dave Wegener, those days came to an end decades ago and the staff at the Ashland Fire Department is busier than ever. People still believe that we just sit around the station, probably because of what they see in the movies, Wegener said. Thats just not the case, we are very busy each day with trainings, equipment checks and responding to calls. Fire Chief Wayne Chenier agrees with Wegener and believes each one of his staff members is dedicated to contributing to department operations. Our staff is extremely busy and there is a lot to be done on any given day, Chenier said. You cant be in this department and not be a big contributor. The Ashland Fire Department provides a number of services to the community including fire suppression, fire prev ention through building inspections and education, public education, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), car seat technician services and education, hazmat (hazardous waste and materials) services, ice rescue services, inter-facility transfers and offers mutual aid to other EMS providers in Ashland and Bayfield counties. Additionally, the Ashland Fire Department provides medical coverage for area events such as races at the ABC Raceway, polar plunges and football games. ASHLAND PRESS
