Ashlyn Update: We are home again. Ashlyn had at least 10 more stitches put in her back last night to stop the leaking. Right when we were about the get discharged from the Pediatric ICU today Ashlyns back swelled way up and was hot to the touch. After a group of doctors and nurses looking quite concerned we finally got Ashlyns surgeon in her room and he explained that her shunt does not go all the way into her spinal column because of the delicate nature of her anatomy. He placed the shunt in the subcutaneous region by the wound. As it turns out that the proteins in this tissue can clog the shunt and pressure needs to be applied very carefully to force the spinal fluid and proteins through the shunt. Normally we would still be in the PICU but because Ray and I are doing so well taking care of her; and because that super scary virus has landed in Western Mass and many of the kids in the PICU have it, we were allowed to bring the little love home. Because of the heightened level of care Ray wont get to go back to work as soon as we hoped but the doctors felt that it was safer for us to treat her at home than to have her exposed to that virus. So, we are home. Ashlyn is resting with our puppy that has not left her side. Claire is happy to have everyone back. Hopefully we get to stay home. She has dance class tomorrow so hopefully well get some cute Claire pictures to post.
