Ashutosh Dube – In a poll for question as to who would make a better PM for India, Indira Gandhi got the first place with 39% votes while Atalji came second with 27% votes. This shows our lack of political awareness and resultant poor state of affairs be attributed to this. Indira created more problems and solved very few. Punjab, Assam infiltration, ULFA, crisis of federal structure, murder of democracy in 1975 a blot on reincarnate but infant Indian democracy. She could not solve poverty , Pakistan, Kashmir despite the fact that she had unstinted support of people from Punchayat to Parliament, single party democracy, support of USSR at that time most powerful nation(USA lost Vietnam war in1975, lost Afganistan to USSR 1989, China also ate humble pie in Vietnam in 1979), and 17 years time. Atalji had a coalition govt, got only 6 years compared to 17 years of Indira, no powerful ally abroad but a unipolar world under USA. Yet he made India dare the world, conduct 3 nuclear tests on 11 may 1998 and again 2 nuclear tests on 13 may when faced with vehement opposition and sanctions from the major countries. He inherited 3% slow Growth and bequeathed 9.54% and an stable 3.7% inflation to the next govt. Chidambaram said in 2004 that UPA inherited a sound fiscal system. He created 6 crore jobs. For the first time in history of independent India a lost territory was retrieved in Kargil. 80 years old Caveri dispute was solved. He rejuvenated pristine policy of infrastructure development ( pristine due to Ashok’s policy of road development) which was neglected by earlier regimes and again by the UPA during last 10 years. But he created no new problem for India. He was right in saying “meine kaal ke kapaal par apni uplabdhiyon ki rekha khinchee hei jisko koi mita nahi sakega”. Country needs political education so that it can compare its leaders more objectively and can get a right one.
