Asian Games 2104 comes to an end while the results of a number of matches ignited a huge amount of doubts and questions about the fairness of the decisions made by the referees as well as the accountability of Korea as the host of the games. The result of few recent matches during Asian Games prove that South Korea as the host manipulated the wrestling matches in favor of Korean athletes. Here we provided a very controversial case from a Greco-Roman wrestling match at 71 kg that happened in the fourth day of wrestling matches during the Asian Games in Incheon. Korean Jung Ji Hyun’s victory against Saeid Abdevali from Iran was absolutely controversial as it is believed Jung was survived from an apparent loss in the semifinals after action resumed by the referees: “Officials explained later that Abdvali’s front headlock prior to “pinning” Jung was illegal and not to be allowed. When action resumed, Abdvali led 6-4 but Jung was able to secure a body drop on his way to a 9-6 win.” (Source: UWW website) The following analytical notes and reasons prove that the decisions made by referees of the match between Jung and Abdevali violate the rules and regulations of the UWW. 1. If Abdevalis front headlock throw was illegal, why did not the referee claim so on the spot? Based on World Wrestling rules “the referee must never hesitate to interrupt the bout at exactly the right time, neither too soon nor too late.” When Abdevali was doing a headlock sequence, the only person close to the scene was the referee on the mat. He never stopped the match for claiming an illegal hold. He gave three 2 points to Abdevali as the result of a front headlock throw sequence. Both the judge and the chairman confirmed the scores. 2. If Abdevalis sequence of the front headlock throws was illegal, why didn’t the Korean coaches challenge it right away? 3. Abdevalis front headlock throw was not illegal. According to World Wrestling rules “ In executing a hold, only one arm may be used to hold the opponents head or neck. Holding the head or neck with two hands is illegal”. Abdevali held Jungs left arm and head together into a front headlock. The pictures and the video prove that Avdevali never used his hands to hold either just the neck or the head. 4. After sequential headlock throws, Abdevali pinned Jung and the referee asked for the chairmans confirmation, and it was approved. Thus, the match was officially ended by the confirmation of all the referees. According to the World Wrestling rules “In all cases, the referee will strike the mat only after he has obtained confirmation from the judge or, failing this, from the mat chairman. The referee will then blow his whistle in order to end the bout.” 5. The referee on the mat was about to claim Abdevali as the winner of the match, when unexpectedly the South Korean coaches challenged the result. Based on the World Wrestling rules “It will not be possible to request any challenge in case of a fall, being understood that the fall must be validated by the mat chairman following the judge or the referees decision.” There is no doubt that such incidents will distort the reputation and reliability of wrestling in the eyes of the IOC. We should not forget how the whole wrestling family fought hard to return their beloved sport to the Olympics Games.
