Asok reiterates plea for all-party meet on Darjeeling tangle Siliguri, 22 August: The former urban development minister Mr Asok Bhattacharya ~ the CPI-M point-man on the Hills during the Left regime ~ said both the state government and the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha should take initiatives so as to enable the GTA to function responsibly. “The present situation in Darjeeling Hills would turn critical if the state and GJMM keep on bull-fighting,” Mr Bhattacharya said. “Though the Centre has a role, the onus is on the state government to initiate things,” he added. He further said that the state CPI-M has decided to involve the Governor Mr M K Narayanan into the crisis to have it resolved. “A delegation led by the leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, Mr Surjya Kanta Mishra today served a memorandum to the Governor, demanding his intervention,” he added. Notably, the GJMM chief Mr Bimal Gurung has posted his view on his Facebook account regarding the Governor’s role in the tangle. “We welcome the Governor of West Bengal’s view that he is ready to mediate,” Mr Bimal Gurung said. “We hope he would take appropriate steps as early as possible,” Mr Gurung further said. Mr Bhattacharya said: “We wonder why the state government is reluctant to resolve the crisis through dialogue.” “If chief minister Mamata Banerjee thinks that she would appoint an administrator to run the GTA it would be another blunder and Darjeeling imbroglio would get too intractable for solution,” he said. Ruling out approaching the central party leadership on the matter, he said it is a state matter.
