Assalam. Let us share d little we know about Hajj, in sha Allah. Hajj usually takes not more than 10 days, out of which four days are of intensive rituals: 1. Sermon of Arafat. 2, praying at Muzdalifa. 3, Stoning of Shaitan at Mina, 3. Safa and Marwa, and 4, Circumambulation of Kaaba. The rest are advisable but not obligatory. But we, the Tijanias consider the visitation to Rasul’s (s) Tomb as Obligatory and not advisory. Our going to Hajj without paying a visit to Rasul renders our Hajj as something huge is missing, in sha Allah. Our topic is Hajj. Lets discuss it. Sermon of mount Arafat occupies a very vital position in all the rituals of Hajj. It commences first before the rest of the rituals as stipulated above. Arafat is a name of Mountain that Rasul (s) stood and gave his final or farewell Khutba (sermon). It is called “Waqoof-e-Arafat.” Allah named his religion as “Islam” on this day. Mount Arafat is situated SouthEast of Mecca. A Mosque called “Masjid e Nimra” is constructed at Arafat. Khutba is delivered from this Mosque. Two Salats are offered each yr in this Mosque. Whereas Zuhur and Asr are offered together, so is Magrib and Isha. All the above activities takes place on the 9th of Islamic Calendar of 9th of Zilhija, in sha Allah. Allah says in verse 197, “For Hajj are the month well known. If anyone undertakes that duty there in, let there be no obscenity, nor wickedness, nor wrangling in the Hajj, and whatever good ye do (be sure) Allah knoweth it. And take provision with you but the best provisions is right conduct. So fear Me, O ye that are wise.” 198, ...Then when ye pour down from (Mount) Arafat, celebrate the praises of Allah at the Sacred Monument (Kaba), and celebrate His praises as He has directed you, even though, before this, ye went astray.” (Sura Baqara). After Sunset on the 9th of Dhul al-Hijja after Wakoof-e-Arafat (final sermon), pilgrims head towards Mina after sunset. Mina is situated southeast of Mecca. In between Arafat and Mina is an open field called Muzdalifah. A sermon is also given there. It is called Waqoof-e-Muzdalifa. (Final sermon of Rasul (s) at Muzdalifa). Pilgrims stops at Muzadalifa and offer Magrib and Isha prayers together. They pass the nights in this open field through praying. Some sleeps n wake up to continue supplications. Pilgrims continue to Mina the next morning. At mina, pilgrims undertake the symbolic ritual of stoning Shaitan. It is agreed that Shaitan appeared to Annabi Ismael (ra) to convince him to disobey his father, Annabi Ibrahim (ra) by refusing to be scarified. Satan appeared 3 times to him and each time, Annabi Ismael throws a stone at him. There are three wells representing the sight of stoning with pebbles. Hajj takes place here. This is the day Rasul (s) sacrifices Ram that Allah replaced in place of Annabi Ismael (ra). After the ritual of stoning and sacrifices are over, pilgrims undertake the ritual of “Safa and Marwa” Safa and Marwa means “to and fro” Like going to the north and coming back to the south, and repeating it several times. Nana Hajar (ra), mother of Annabi Ismael (ra) was said to have placed her baby son, (Annabi Ismaeal (ra)) at this sport, after her husband (Annabi Ibrahim (ra) left them there, but later returned and built Kaaba with his 1st son, Ismeal (ra)), and then she went “to and fro” (safa and marwa) in search of water for her tasty n crying baby. She did that 7x, and on d 7th x, she saw water miraculously gushed underneath her baby Ismael (ra). Since then, neighboring nomads, visitors, and far away people moved and settled there. Pilgrims then shave their entire body hairs, bath ghusul akbar (major purification), wear tawaf (white cloth) and head to Kaaba for the final ritual of circumambulation while chanting labaika lahumma labaika labaika lasharika labaik innal hamda wanihmatan lasharikabaik….Pilgrims go around the Kaaba 7x. This is the final ritual of Hajj. After that, pilgrims can visit cave hira, the bith place of Rasul, Rasul’s Tomb, and other places of significant depending on the pilgrim’s interest. May Allah make us among those going to Hajj next year, in sha Allah. Ameen.
