Astrology – How does any of this make sense in today’s day and age when the vast amount of knowledge available to us through science show how irrational and unlikely it is that there is any truth in star signs and horoscopes? Aside from the fact that the naming and identification of constellations is purely an arbitrary decision by people of the ancient world to map out the cosmos as they saw it (truly it is no better than seeing a cloud and thinking it looks like an elephant only a cloud can rain on you and ruin your day) and horoscopes are merely an individual mediums interpretation of unscientific readings of the position of these constellations and planets the idea that any of these constellations or planets could have any effect on us is without basis and completely preposterous. First off the constellations or, more specifically, the signs of the zodiac; these are a collection of stars spaced apart from one another by light years in a three dimensional grid. We see the night sky, as our ancient ancestors did, in a two dimensional image. If the night sky were a black curtain with pinholes in it could potentially see some plausibility in their affecting us as they all would be equidistant from us (I have more to say about why even then it wouldn’t be true). But they’re not. That’s just the way we see as if they are all grouped together; connected. But the truth is that a star just outside the constellation may be closer to us and one star in the constellation than any of the others. How is it that that star doesn’t hold any effect while the others do? How can we dismiss some, anywhere in the night sky, that are closer to Earth but believe wholeheartedly that stars in a completely random grouping somehow control our futures and how we behave? There is no cosmological influence from outside our solar system on behavior. But let’s look within our solar system. The planets supposedly have some effect on us according to astrologers. Well; not really. We revolve around a vast star of our own which does have an effect on us; our sun. If you know anything about physics you will know that gravity is an extremely strong force; stronger than light. We are trapped in the gravitational field of our sun and, additionally, so are all of the planets and asteroids and comets within our solar system. The gravity of, say, Neptune has no effect on us whatsoever. What about Mars or Venus; our two closest neighbours? Nada. Zilch. They are directly influenced by the sun and not by us or us them. There is no wibble in orbits when we reach our closest positions respective of one another. There is no chain or tether linking us; just that common bond that is our sun. And then there’s the moon. For centuries, and I have even found myself irrationally making the statement, we have connected the moon with personality. Every full moon we explain away irrational behavior with our satellite’s effects. The more rational of us may even point towards tides, which are affected by the moon’s gravity, since we are made up of water. Well; I’ll let Scientific American, a peer reviewed magazine, explain this one: scientificamerican/article.cfm?id=lunacy-and-the-full-moon. It all comes down to there is no scientific basis for astrology. In fact science clearly shows that, other than the true astronomy involved, all aspects of astrology are fraudulent. Again; the horoscopes you read and hear are merely products of the imagination of an astrological “medium”. They know this (and charge you for fakery anyway). If they don’t know this then you are asking advice from a mentally ill person.
