Although aspirin is appropriate for the relief of fever, this patient (Rudy Huxtable) is a 5-year-old child. The use of aspirin in a child with influenza is contraindicated, due to the association of aspirin usage in children with influenza and the development of Reyes syndrome. Reye syndrome is a rare form of acute encephalopathy and fatty infiltration of the liver that tends to occur after some acute viral infections, particularly when salicylates (e.g., aspirin) are used.
