At 7 a.m. Eastern time on April 12, 1981, veteran astronaut John Young and rookie Bob Crippen launched into history aboard Space Shuttle Columbia on STS-1. Columbias maiden voyage, planned for April 10, was delayed due to a computer malfunction, involving the synchronization between the crafts main and backup computers. By launching on April 12, Columbia has the distinction of launching the same day of Yuri Gagarins historic flight.
