At 8:46 AM on September 11th, 2001 our world changed. The sky above my apartment building turned black and the streets I walk on everyday were destroyed, covered in soot and debris. We woke up to a different world. Nearly 3,000 innocent lives were taken from us in an unspeakable act of cowardice fueled by religious fervor. However, that was not the story of the day, it never will be. One of my clearest memories was waking up that morning and coming into the living room confused about what had happened. Tears. I also remember the heroism of the day. Hundreds of men and women selflessly sacrificing themselves to save as many people as they could. Rescue workers working for days upon days trying to bring just one person home. The word hero gets thrown around most of the time, but when I think of a firefighter heading towards the burning towers while all others ran away I realize that title belongs to that man. Those men and women are true heroes, and that will always be the prevailing story of the day. Shortly after I moved here my friend and I helped a woman on the train, she told us New Yorkers are like family. Those words have stayed with me. I am immensely proud to live in what I believe to be the greatest city on Earth. I only hope that one day I can protect and serve this great city I call home, just as those heroes who came before me did so selflessly. So today while Americas flags fly at half mast let us remember the 343 FDNY firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, 37 PAPD officers, 15 EMTs, and 3 court officers lost that day. Robert Scoble thinks I chose my life path that day. I believe I did. I am eternally grateful to him for never sheltered me from the harsh realities of that day. Never forget.
