At MOE’s Work Plan Seminar, I had the chance to play with a toy. This toy isn’t your average one though. It is designed to help you learn about Pythagoras’ Theorem! The person behind this toy is Dr Muhammad Nazir bin Amir of Greenview Secondary School, a recipient of the President’s Award for Teachers this year. To make lessons more engaging for his students, Dr Nazir comes up with innovative methods of teaching. There are many such teachers in our schools. Still, there is much we can do to support our teachers in their professional development to teach better. This is why we will put in the effort to do the following for our teachers: provide more specialisation opportunities, deepen our support for mentoring and grow learning communities among them. In promoting a culture of professional development, we will need to make more time and space for our teachers to teach better. This will involve simplifying processes, activities and events, scaling up good practices through technology and strengthening centralised support for schools in complex finance and procurement issues. We will also need better tools and ideas to do things better. I also hope to strengthen the support of parents for what we do. When our teachers are respected and appreciated by parents, our teachers will teach better too. Our collective cause is to bring out the best in every child so let us now be the pioneers of our time, to build on the legacy of our pioneers and shape the future of Singapore in the next 50 years!
