At Matching Green 20th July. AKA – I’ll have a flake with that please?! AKA – The Bowling Yips (again) So, Saturday brought the return fixture against the slanderous and libellous Matching Green (mgcc.hitscricket/scorecard/fixtureID_342720/Matching-Green-2nd-XI-v-Thundridge-18-May-2013.aspx) Showing off their shiny new pavilion, it was a shame they couldn’t manage to spend some money on the outfield, by filling in the holes and cutting the grass. Skipper won the toss and decided to bowl first. Our bowling line up wasn’t strong this week with Pagey providing the firepower, but struggling with a sore back and legs, Mozza (yips number 1), Brinky (yips number 2) Boldy (im never bowling ten today) and George, our fielding was going to have to be top notch. We feared for a longish afternoon as the early breakthroughs didn’t materialise. Pagey was having no luck at all and the usual array of outside edges and false shots only succeeded in making a glowing Page even hotter. Mozza was struggling again with the yips at the other end, and the extras box was being well used. After 14 overs, both bowlers had a blow, and were replaced by Brinky and Boldy. Brinky’s liquorice soon did for the openers and both were back in the hutch within the next 2 overs. Brinky then sent number 3 back with a ball that was about a foot outside leg stump that the batsman somehow managed to find a way to direct it stump wards. Pagey threatened some violence if a five for was achieved today. Boldy, meanwhile at the other end was booming some big swingers, but outside edges were hard to come by, and the scoreboard kept a rolling. With 4 and 5 scoring at will (I think Skipper missed a cheeky legside catch off number 4 very early J, oh and an LBW shout that was plumb!) it was 187 runs later that the 4th wicket fell with Kieran (I’m going to stop everything with my feet to make sure i don’t harm my guitar hands) pouching number 5 off Brinky. George replaced Brinky, and went for 10 and over for a while before Mozza returned to finally remove number 4, four runs short of his hundred. Pagey concluded the innings, replacing the wicketless Boldy, and by the end with some very tired bodies and minds, the extras box full up with 63, and our worst ever runs conceded figure of 345, we retired for what had better be a darn fine tea. A plentiful Tea was nicely laid out in the new carpet smelling pavilion, (also, served by) a nice construction with more than adequate facilities! And so the sapped openers Skipper and Nick, who had done much of the leather chasing earlier, set about the huge task of chasing down 345. Not entirely sure how you go about that, as our batting line up to be fair, was a bit lacking in firepower. A steady start at 5 an over was soon put to an end, when Tommy fell in the 7th over. Big Keith, having been promoted to number 3 after recent straight bat displays, was too firm and straight first ball, and batted one back to bowler who took a smart catch. George in at 4 was clearly eyeing up the very short legside boundary (reckon it was only about 30 odd metres) and both he (5) and Skipper (22) in the next over were bowled, and 345 looked miles away at 53 for 4. Pagey and Brinky were now at the crease and the tempo went up a bit. Brinky was also eyeing up the short legside boundary and made good use of some leg stump bowling. The pair put on 75 for the fifth wicket, Brinky tolling 55 before a mis timed drive spooned up to cover. Big chance missed me thinks. Pagey was dealing in ones and twos mainly as he was joined by Boldy. Pagey was next to go adding only another one to the score before being bowled by Juniors first straight ball. Boldy meanwhile was mainly dealt in fours and sixes, including one in the pond and a 94 metre effort straight to the car park. This eclipsed Brinky’s 84 metre effort which was slightly more long off than straight. Sadly Boldys 94 is just short of Cooperman’s 96 to the far corner of the football field the other week. With the score edging nowhere near 345, Boldy was joined and left by Steve (5) Sam (0) and Kieran (2) before he succumbed as the last man for a well struck 32, and 173 all out. At least handshakes were exchanged (except Junior) at the end of this match and I’m sure some smart comment about the result may appear on their website.
