At approximately 4:20pm yesterday evening, just preceding the Official re-opening ceremony of the Gun Hill Signal Station, a most memorable event took place. Mrs Marina Laurie, widow of the late Mr Keith Laurie, past president of the Barbados National Trust, graciously accepted the invitation of the Council of the Barbados National Trust to plant a tree in his memory. At the site, a formal invitation was extended to Mrs Laurie by 1st Vice President, Mr Gerry Proverbs, to engage in the tree planting exercise. The Lauries daughters, Keith-Anne, Rae and Victoria, were all in attendance at this very touching event which was a part of the re-opening of the Signal Station. The Re-opening Ceremony was very well attended by several dignitaries, including the Hon Minister of Tourism, Mr Richard Sealy, members of the Diplomatic core, members of the Board of the Tourism Development Corp., and Senior management of several major companies and organizations. Words of welcome were delivered by BNT General Manager, William Gollop, followed by President Karl Watsons address who then went on to introduce the Hon Minister of Tourism Mr Richard Sealy. Mr Sealy complimented the Trust on the work completed and once again commented that the BNT continues to be one of the best organizations to which Government provides grants and subventions, ....providing the best return on their investment! En route to the Signal Station from the Pavilion, several guests exclaimed at the beautiful, newly designed Landscaping created by council member Dr John Webster, & installed by his company Landscapes in Harmony. New also were the benches designed & installed by Robert Hutson, also a member of the Gun Hill committee. Robert was also responsible for the design and installation of the new pathway/wheelchair-accessible ramp that now provides access to the Signal Tower .... Guests were escorted to the Signal Station with a drum roll played by a member of the Zouave band, where Taps was played by Buglers from the BDF at the lowering of the Barbados flag at sunset. For the next two hours, as the sunset turned into night & the twinkling lights of the surrounding area came alive, the invited guests & members of the BNT socialized to the Steelpan music of Cicely Gay while enjoying the tasty treats & drinks offered.
