At last, LAUTECH holds SUG election, elects leaders The hot and fiercely contested Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Students’ Union Government Election has come and gone. After series of postponement, the Student Union Government election was held on March 13, 2014. Replicating the scene of a national election, Candidates contesting for the offices of the Union rolled out their tom-tom drums; nooks and crannies of LAUTECH and its immediate communities awash with campaign posters, fliers, banners and billboards of aspirants; bearing their photographs, various campaign inscriptions and organs. On Thursday, March 13, 2014, the Students went to the poll enmasse, to cast their votes for their various candidates aspiring for different positions in the Students Union Government. The election was held simultaneously at the Six Faculties in the Main Campus in Ogbomoso and at the College of Health Sciences at Osogbo Campus. LAUTECH Electoral Commissioners and Security operatives, including officers of the Man ’O War, Cadets, Lautech Road Safety Corps (LRSC) and Lautech Command were strategically positioned at the polling units long before the voting started. The election was slated to start by 8.00am but there was late arrival of voters in some faculties, as a result, voting started by 10.00am. Students, except for those in 100 level who were not eligible to vote were checked in with either their Identity Cards, School Receipt or Course form, at the polling Units. The atmosphere at the main campus was peaceful and the election witnessed huge turnout of voters. There was commotion at the Faculty of Agricultural sciences polling unit when the voting started, but was quelled by the security operatives and some lecturers. Chaos was also stifled at the polling unit of Faculty of Management Sciences. The election was brought to an end at the six faculties at exactly 3.00pm which was the official time for voting to end and counting of votes immediately began. The votes were counted with the employment of ‘Optical Character Reader (OCR)’- a Vote-counting machine, which made the counting of the vote fast and stress-free. At about 7:30pm, the ballot papers and results from Osogbo was brought to the venue for the collation of final result, which was 1200 Lecture Theatre. Collation of results started at around 8:00pm. Students and observers waited anxiously to hear the results after collation started. The students stood around, some climbed window-side of the Lecture Theatre to have a better view. The election was keenly contested; the final result was announced at exactly 9:10pm. Areo Ajibola, a.k.a AREXZIE, of the Department of Agricultural Economics, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences was declared as the newly elected President of the Students’ Union Government. He won with 2321 votes, defeating his opponents, Oke Oluwaseun, DR. YOUNG, who got 1605 votes; Idogbe Adewale, EMPEROR, 181 votes, Lawal Kehinde, ABILITY, 77 votes, and Egunyomi Olusola, ELERE, 42 votes. The post of the VICE PRESIDENT 1 went to Oyewole Rofiat Nike, NIKKY who got 2308 votes, while her contender, Bamidele Oluwayemisi, IDEAL got 1534 votes. Bello Fatima, PHATTY-ACID was declared the elected VICE PRESIDENT 11, having 2053 votes; Fabiyi Taiwo O. HON THAIWO was blessed with 1176 votes. Olaoye Saheed, PROF, lost the post of GENERAL SECRETARY with 1526 votes to Adewole Hafiz, HAMZZ, who got 1802 votes. Olofinhaka Raphael, OLOFIN won as the ASSISTANT GENERAL SECRETARY with 1871 votes. Abimbola Kayode S. ALLAN SEED, 1610 votes. Elegbeleye Sylvester, ICON, was declared the elected FINANCIAL SECRETARY, having the majority votes of 1656; Akintunde Akinfenwa, AGENT AK had 743 votes, Maranroola Kazeem, KAYZEE, 1383 votes. For Office of the PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER, Ajibola Zakariyyah, D’LECTURER, emerged victorious having 1731 votes while his opponents, Ayotunde Olude, BUGA and Yahaya Hammed, DON MARIO, had 1359 votes and 823 votes respectively. Nofiu Olanrewaju, ALUTA ROCKET, was declared the winner for the Office of WELFARE DIRECTOR, having defeated his opponent, Ayeni Tolulope, MR RIGHT, with a wide margin of 2088 to 962 votes. Oladapo Babatunde, HOLYBOY, won as the SPORT DIRECTOR, having 2132 votes, while his contender, Olorunleke Israel, IZZY got 1248 votes. The Office of SOCIAL DIRECTOR was contested unopposed by Olukunle Olamilekan, PHENDY K.; an upcoming hip-hop artiste well-known on campus. The final result was declared by the LAUTECH Electoral Commission Chairman, Bolanle Sherifdeen a.k.a TREASURE, a 500 level Student of Physic Department, and certified by the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Olabiyisi S.O. The election was very free and fair, successful and peaceful although all necessary security arrangement had been put in place within the election venues. After the final declaration of the election results, the joy of the patiently waited LADOKITES knows no bound as they started chanting solidarity songs, jubilating and congratulating the elected candidates who were seen around the venue.
