At nine a.m. on September 11, a crane operator was at home on Long Island watching TV as the planes struck. He jumped into his car and raced to Manhattan, knowing crane operators would be needed. Near the towers, he found an abandoned crane, started it up, and went to work, expecting quick relief. He worked the rubble for twenty-four hours. Exhausted, he went to a nearby church for respite. A young woman with spiked green hair and multiple visible piercings approached him. He was a man of certain values, who raised his children according to certain rules - no body holes, no short skirts, no visible tummy, short hair on boys, and long hair on girls. In silence, the green-haired woman pulled off his boots, washed his filthy feet, dried them with a towel, and put clean socks on him. The scriptures teach that human beings are made in the likeness and image of God. It is my belief that actions of selfless love born in faith help that image grow clearer. It is not about what one looks like. It is not about political beliefs. It is not about theologies. It is about being a part of the body of God. It is about willingly being the hands that operate the crane, or the heart that sees to the washing of tired feet; each is necessary and each learns from the other. Lets Pray: Dear God, You create us in Your image. Teach us to see past the images we project to each other and into the love that lives within us. Amen. Heres a Thought: From the heart, the hands act.
