At present, based on all the evidence I had gathered from published papers, herbarium records, book chapters, magazines, books, observations of Malaysian/Indonesian colleagues, and my own field observations, both Malaysia and Indonesia have the most mangrove species (both True and Associates) in the world! With the ongoing taxonomic research happening now in Asia, we will definitely add a few more Sonneratia, Ceriops, Bruguiera, Heritieria, Avicennia, Lumnitzera and other species, to an already long and bio-diverse listing. For Peninsular Malaysia, the stretch from Langkawi to Lumut, including Merbok, Kerian & Matang, deserved special protection and management strategy. This listing will burst if we add the mangal aerial plants. This week long trip to meet many mangrove colleagues, plus observations from Johor to Perlis, confirmed clearly that South East Asia is indeed the most bio-diverse mangrove region in the world! It is now up to Malaysians, and also our Indonesian friends, to protect, conserve and manage their world-best mangrove biodiversity!
