At the Lucknow rally on 2 March, against the BJP’s claim of a 15 lakh strong turnout, the actual attendance was not more than three lakh. Even by modest estimates, the party would have spent Rs 14,000 per head, where Rs 5 crore was spent on 29 trains booked by the party to ferry people to Lucknow, Rs 10 crore on 6,000 hired buses, Rs 10 crore for 15,000 SUVs, cars and other vehicles, besides another 15 crore for food, lodging and other arrangements. Of the eight rallies addressed by Modi in Uttar Pradesh, the concluding rally was in Lucknow on 2 March. Sixteen of the 29 trains booked by the party to ferry people, came from western UP. While the railway authorities were reluctant to book more than 24 trains, they agreed to increase the number to 29 after the party took up the matter with the railway board. The Railways earned over Rs 5 crore from Modi’s Lucknow rally. The party hired 6,000 buses, including 1,000 from the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation. It also deployed 15,000 SUVs and other vehicles to mobilise the crowd for the rally. At the venue, food and lodging arrangements were made for over two lakh people who had reached a day earlier.
