At the #UN #Climate #Summit in New York , China declared that it would strive to reach a peak of its carbon dioxide emissions as early as possible and to announce its post-2020 actions on climate change during the first quarter of 2015. As the most populous developing country, China is still under enormous pressure of development and poverty eradication, with millions of variables to consider and manage. More than 200 million Chinese are still living below the poverty line ; China’s the per capita carbon emissions are less than 1/2 that of the US. China ’s emissions are survival rather than luxury. However, Beijing has been making huge painstaking efforts to reconcile economic growth with environmental protection. In 2013, China’s carbon intensity dropped by nearly 29% from the 2005 level, equivalent to a reduction of 2.5 billion tons of CO2 emissions. The issue of climate change has been elevated to a top priority within China-US relationship. The progress that Beijing and Washington have made so far on climate change cooperation is impressive and inspiring. Cooperation on climate change can be a highlight that stands out in our shared endeavor to building new model of major country relationship.
