At the end of April 2015, my wonderful husband Ben, and 3 of his closest friends become ‘OPERATION GENGHIS’ (let’s hope they are still close when they get home!) to undertake an epic 10,000 mile pan-continental road trip for charity across numerous mountain ranges, deserts, barren and inhospitable lands, a third of the way around the world to Mongolia. They will be driving a fully equipped ex-NHS ambulance which through the charity gohelp.org.uk will then be donated or leased to hospitals, clinics and non- governmental organisations (NGOs) working in Mongolia. The idea was originally thought up by Jimmy who when surfing the net for an exciting and charitable way to spend his 6 week medical elective (they will all be graduating as Junior Doctors in Summer 2015) stumbled upon the new charity - Medics2Mongolia medics2mongolia was founded by three medical students from Newcastle University; who in the summer of 2012 planned their own medical elective around a charity project (GoHelp) to drive to and deliver an ambulance to Mongolia, where they are in dire need of emergency vehicles. The 3 have now pledged to support other students that want to make a difference in Mongolia whilst continuing their medical careers. When they (finally) arrive….Ben, Jimmy, Sarah and Alexi will be delivering structured English programs to Mongolian doctors, allowing them to consult with English-speaking patients, apply for conferences, fellowships and bursaries, and have access to the most up-to-date English medical resources. so to my Part - As I am not allowed to go with them (well someone has to look after the kids after all), I decided that I would do my little bit to help. They need a fairly statuesque £13000 to fund the trip and so I am undertaking the following silly stunts to get the ball rolling a bit – PLEASE sponsor me between now and April if you can – I will add photos as proof of each challenge as I undertake it! Oh, and I will do it all wearing a set of scrubs….. 6th Dec 2014 - Bungee Catapult! EEK! Propelled into the air to a height of 100ft, 29 Newton’s and can cause heart rates of up to 200 beats per minute. Thank goodness there will be a doctor there…If he can stop laughing long enough to treat me that is. January 2015 - Yep – DRY JANUARY …….a whole 31 days off the booze…..Will be making it count on New Year’s Eve then…. 7th February - Apparently I should expect 5 miles of steep hills, cold water, sand, rocks and lots of mud. Errrrrr – What they should expect are tears and tantrums…and that’s just Ben! Ha ha. Have started training this week with the 9 week ‘ couch potato to 5k’ program. Let’s hope it’s enough……. March 2015 (date and venue TBA) – Caroline’s sponsored SILENCE….. For those who know me well, THE LESS SAID ABOUT THAT THE BETTER!!! APRIL 2015 - Bright red hair with a blue fringe……It is the colours of the Mongolian flag after all…….Will I end up looking like a smurf? – Probably!
