At the end of World War II, the OSS, who had been traveling with the Viet Minh in the mountains in order to be able to radio weather reports to the American pilots, who had given the Viet Minh the M1 carbines to fight the Japanese, who were aware of the Genius of Ho Chi Minh, Giap and others, told president Truman he should back the Viet Minh. But he didnt listen. When the Viet Minh could not get salt in the mountains and the French were watching the roads, the women carried salt up into the mountains tea spoon by tea spoon. When the French dug in at Dien Bien Phu and claimed the Viet Minh could not dislodge them without artillery and had no means to acquire it, the Viet Minh traveled to China, acquired artillery pieces, broke them down into parts and rolled the parts home on bicycles where they were reassembled. In 1954 the Viet Minh overran Dien Bien Phu and took the entire French Foreign Legion prisoner. Still the politicians ignored them. You know what happened next. The politicians, many of whom could not locate Viet Nam on a map, who could not even pronounce Vietnamese, in order to advance their careers, rode the rising star of Joseph McCarthys anti-communist propaganda and sent in the CIA and then the troops. Politicians, short-sighted, ignorant, in thrall to the rich and to their own narcissism, keep on doing the same thing.
