At the height of the Irish Potato Famine in 1847, almost 4,000 ships carried food from Ireland to England and Scotland while 400,000 Irish died of starvation and related diseases. The same year, a Native American tribe sent $710 to help ease the suffering. Also, the Ottoman Empire sent ships full of food, were turned away by the British, and then snuck into Dublin illegally to provide aid to the starving Irish. (en.wikipedia.org, thepenmagazine.net) ...Just some factoids that one isnt taught in most American schools. Im using the day to recognize those who suffered while honoring the contributions and perseverance of the Irish people.
