At the library, this afternoon.... These two people, a dude and a girl, sitting across the table from me will not just shut up... The dude: curly brown hair, light eyes, Mediterranean complexion, terrible accent, but good English. Italian, or Southern European, was my guess. The girl: hair long overdue for a remake, light-skinned, for a black girl, lips as thick as mine, accent abundantly Igbo-tic (I hate that word, by the way!), English terrible - just terrible. Nigerian, most definitely. Girl asks guy: So whats your name? Guy says: Ismail or something like that. Girl asks: Are you from Saudi Arabian as well? Guy answers: Oh no. I am African. North African. (I would never have guessed.) Girl says: Egypt, yea? (Actually she is saying yea a lot...like that will make her sound more British.) Guy says:Libya, actually. Girl: Oh Libya, yea? You know you say North Africa, my mind go to Egypt, yea? *laughs* Guy: So you, are you from Nigeria? Girl shakes head vigorously, a tad too vigorously. Guy: Okay...um...Cameroon, Ghana? Girl still shakes head. Then she says the thing that makes me look at her with hot lava in my eyes and sulphur on my breath. This girl, with her village-grammar-school accent and English get mind, open mouth talk say: Im from here. Im British. I was born here...It is where you are born that is where you are from, yea? The guy doesnt reply; he looks flustered. Minutes later he excuses himself and moves to another table. In his mind he probably is like, What the f**k? In my mind, I know I am. SMH...
