At the next fall event the Great War Association will hold its annual election. On behalf of our candidate for Allied Representative to the G8 we would like to post Carter Bertones platform: Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to introduce myself, my name is Carter Bertone and I am running for Allied Representative. Many are concerned that I am a member of the Progressive / Hardcore Wing of our hobby and many of you are concerned regarding exactly what that means. You have undoubtedly heard the fear mongering claiming Bertone wants to get rid of everyone over the age of 45, implement height weight standards, do away with gas guns and 3/4 airplanes, etc. This is exactly what it sounds like, narrow minded drivel by those who cling to outdated routines and low standards simply because That is the way we have always done it. This attitude has led to Great Wars stagnation and has driven far more people away from the WWI experience then towards it. I have commanded the French Line going on seven year now and our accomplishments are certainly noteworthy. Tired of the shoddy, inaccurate reproductions being offered by mainstream dealers, we banded together and purchased our own wool and solicited tailors to make accurate uniforms. We then moved forward and canvassed merchants and craftsmen from other time periods and found those who would be willing to make accurate French WWI equipment. We pressed the envelope, experimenting with 24-hour scenarios, period activities such as soccer games and pay calls, and established a French style cooperative. In doing so we grew our own membership numbers substantially and made a better experience for all participants. Take a look at the French Line; we certainly have our share of Over 40s, heavy guys, and gas guns. The difference is, we stopped settling for the good enough, to a man, we move forward and press to improve our impressions, improve our positions, and experiment with new activities to keep the hobby fresh and exciting. Does this sound like a man who is trying to drive people away from the hobby? Do you want the GWA to be an organization that is always trying to grow and improve or are you happy with the “Status Quo”? If elected as the Allied Representative I will not only be a vocal advocate for Allied concerns but I will look for every opportunity to improve the GWA and our events. My platform is simple: • Authenticity: Improve authenticity standards across the hobby. This means the establishment of a CP and Allied Authenticity Committee, enforcement of standards, and helping units conduct research and better their impressions. • Total transparency to Membership: I will establish an open line of communications to all and ensure that everyone requesting information will be communicated in a timely manner. What problems I cannot solve at my level, will be brought before the board. However, I will not stop there. The CP side will have my ear as well. I have never claimed to be the well-spring of all good ideas and have received and acted on many suggestions and inputs from the Central Powers side. • Self-Reliance: Units of the Allied line and GWA membership cannot expect the GWA leadership to do everything. Individuals and units must take “ownership” of the hobby and take steps to improve it. I will ensure your concerns are brought before the board and are responsive to your needs. If your issue is not promptly taken care of, you will know why. • Centennial Preparations: I will query the membership for a third event, perhaps a winter event on site each year of the centennial and for the GWA to endorse other WWI events? I ask for your support. If you agree with my platform, please vote for me. Carter Bertone
