At the risk of being tarred and feathered, Throwing something out - TopicsExpress

At the risk of being tarred and feathered, Throwing something out there, that has been suggested and/or hinted at before: what are the benefits and downsides of moving all academies to Marshall? From my perspective, the benefits are many. We would finally utilize, and utilize well, an existing, underutilized campus. I have heard many academy parents, including KP George, tout the incredible involved volunteer parents associated with academies. Just think what all that dedication and involvement can do to improve Marshalls overall morale and performance. Ive heard it said that these high achieving kids do better when grouped with other high achievers. Imagine how well they would all perform if all the academies were under one roof! I can envision the establishment of student to student partnerships, mentorships, etc that breathe new life into Marshall zoned kids who may have lost their love of learning along the way. Im certain the academies would move with their teachers. All those strong teachers added to an already solid faculty would have to further strengthen the pride and positivity in the building. The only down sides Ive heard are location - but those same parents seemed quite ok with the qvms location; and the all-too- familiar no one wants their kid there, which I would argue is not a valid reason, especially since the there in question will improve when our district shows we want it to. Maybe the best way to address the empty seats in Marshall is the bold move of housing academies there. Maybe the best way to handle the issues academies pose to other buildings is to move them. I think our Board just might be strong enough to make this work, even if Dr. Dupre has all but given up on addressing 2 gigantic issues: underutilized, low- performing schools and academies, and how they impact the buildings in which they live. Admittedly, I have no horse in this race. My kids will not attend academies, and I am hopeful we will be zoned to a high school that is not impacted. But - Ive always felt fbisd as a district is only as good as its weakest link. Lets fix ours!
