At the time of acquisition, this chap was a mystery man. But sleuthing by Research Associate, Ann Lowe, soon determined his identity. Henry Peter Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux (1778-1868), 1868 oil on canvas Purchase, 2008 Today we have Henry Peter Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux (1778–1868), (“Brougham” is pronounced Broom), a British statesman who became Lord Chancellor of the United Kingdom in the 1830s. Previous to this, he had served as an attorney for the spurned Queen Caroline of Brunswick, when George IV tried to divorce her and deny her rights as Queen. Lord Brougham died in May 1868 at Cannes, on the French Riviera, and is buried there as well. At the time of his death, a print appeared in the Illustrated London News, 16 May 1868, from which Anthony Flower did this painting. Another interesting element is that Anthonys pencil grid lines are clearly evident as he transposed the ILN image to a larger version. Like all of his oils, this work has some condition issues as well, with cracking of the glazing and the work needs to be re-stretched. Hopefully well be able to get some treatment done on the painting in the near future.
