At this time of year, it is sometimes the *signs* of insects that are most conspicuous. I spotted this yellowjacket nest (Dolichovespula sp.) under the eave of the boathouse on the shore of Prospect Lake in Memorial Park, Colorado Springs, this afternoon. Just during the time we were there birdwatching, the nest fell down. Im not sure if the nest ever reached its full potential, but Im surprised it was allowed to persist long enough to get to *this* size, given the amount of human activity in the park.
