Atheism Myth #42: All you atheists prove that God exists by making such a big deal about atheism! Right... because people never die over ideas, huh? Hi there, Josh here, and this is ridiculous. You think this is a rare accusation? Nope... It dresses itself up a dozen different ways, but really, this is a strain of the ontological argument. Maybe youve heard that term before, but dont know what it means? Dont feel bad, I know what it means, and youre arguably happier pretending theres more to it than there is. But get ready to have your happiness destroyed by some stupid: The ontological argument for the existence of god: Gee, I think god is the best! Literally, the best creature conceivably possible! There could be no greater creature, surely! Letsee, what would make God LESS great... If he didnt exist! And SINCE God is the greatest creature ever, he MUST exist, because if he didnt, hed not be the greatest creature ever! Surely, actually existing is a requirement of being the greatest... Bullet-proof logic! Yes, seriously, thats the core of the ontological argument. Youll see it dressed up from time to time, but theres the gist. That the meaning and existence of the word God proves He exists. There are many variants, but it always comes down to If there is no god, we couldnt be having this discussion! ... If you cant make a fuss over a fictional character without the character not being fiction, we would no longer have fiction. Pip, Sherlock Holmes, Toad, Sir Lancelot, the Cat in the Hat. Surely, the Cat in the Hat is the best possible cat! I mean, he talks, and thinks up advanced schemes! And has hats! Can you think of a cat greater?! He MUST be real! And dont say the Cheshire cat, you heathen! And Scooby Doo... Man, if you cant discuss something passionately without it actually existing, that means not only must Scooby Doo exist, but SCRAPPY DOO must exist! Come on... Do you want to live in a world where Scrappy Doo exists Thats my counter-argument to the ontological argument. If Scrappy Doo exists, were all doomed. Does that make sense? No. Welcome to the ontological argument. - Josh
