Athletes, officials, spectators and the media were treated to an outstanding performance at the Athletics South Interclub meet at the Domain Athletic Centre today when NWAC athlete Deon Kenzie broke the WR in the T38 1500m. Having come agonisingly close to the mark of 4:09.50 back in October running 4:09.58, the conditions in Hobart were perfect for that time to be improved. Deon had the pace set perfectly by Eastern Suburbs athlete Dejen Gebreselasie, before passing him in the final lap to cross the line in 4:08.51. Surrounded by media following the race, Deon said its something I have been focussing on for some time, Im pleased to get it out of the way at the start of the season. Coach Mike Gunson then faced the cameras, clearly proud of Deons achievement and praising him as an athlete Deon is probably the toughest athlete I have coached and Ive been coaching for well over 20 years and have coached many, many good athletes. I dont think Ive seen a tougher, more determined, more dedicated, more motivated athlete than Deon. Deon is classed as a T38 athlete, the classification for athletes with cerebral palsy down one side, with the condition affecting one limb. Deons cerebral palsy affects the right side of his body, Mike Gunson today spoke of the challenges this presents The ability to change pace and accelerate is very hard, so weve got to work on that. Following the 2014-2015 domestic season in Australia, Deon is looking to compete at the IPC World Championships in Doha, Qatar in October 2015. Having experienced success in major meets previously, winning a bronze at the IPC World Championships in 2013, Deon will be taking with him experience to match his new title of the fastest ever over the 1500m. On behalf of the Tasmanian Athletic community, a big congratulations to Deon, coach Mike and all connections, your story is nothing short of inspiring.
