Atlantic City, N.J., June 3. The mermaid girl was the sensation of the formal opening of the summer season here today. Attired in a beach garment of silvery texture, cut short as to skirt, and low as to bodice, with hosiery simulating fish scales to match, she formed a striking picture. And there were many of her. The warning of W. Frank Soy, director of public safety, that display of dimpled knees would lead to arrest, was fully observed. But feminine extremities were covered with the loudest hosiery the beach here has ever seen. Bathing caps took the form of trench helmets and other varieties of headgear associated with the battlefield. Bathing canes were also introduced. They were startling in their colors.
